Bad audio quality with Bluetooth headset on Windows 11

I've recently upgraded to Windows 11 25H2 and my noise cancelling JBL TUNE660 bluetooth headphones would play music as it was transmitted over the phone line (for the technically inclined: with reduced audio bandwidth).

Needless to say that they were working perfectly on the previous laptop and they do work flawlessy on the smarthone.

I did search online and someone complained the same issue (like this user on Microsoft Community), with an Acer laptop (I have an HP) and also with Bose BT headsets.

To me it looks like it is not an issue with Acer, HP, JBL, Bose or any other hardware vendor.

Long story short, it is most likely a Microsoft issue and its use of Bluetooth A2DP profile. In order to restore the high-fidelity audio over your Bluetooth headset you need to disallow the use of the microphone to the software that streams music. Let's clarify with an example.

If you use Mozilla Firefox to listen to radio.garden , you need to disallow Firefox from using the microphone in Settings > Privacy and security > App permissions > Microphone:

Obviously you will loose the ability to speak when audiovideo-conferencing with Firefox (in this example), but the music will play fine.

If you need to use the microphone in-browser, then remember to use a different browser for that use case.

This issue reminds me of Microsoft dropping the Bluetooth SPP (Serial Port Profile) in Windows 8, to re-introduce it in Windows 8.1 as I had found out in 2013!
