First step: charge it.
It kept flashing red and green and did not turn on. The hard reset procedure did nothing, either. I plugged a "USB meter" and saw that it was not drawing any current. The unit is held together with 4 Philips head screws (cross shaped), nothing fancy. The 7.4V Li-poly battery is right there. I checked battery voltage on two accessible exposed contacts and as expected there were ... 0 Volts. No bulging, no leaks, no smell. All good news.
TL;DR. Battery packs with Lithium-based cells include a protection circuit that prevents overcharging as well as overdischarging. So when the battery voltage reaches the minimum acceptable value, the protection citcuit simply opens up and it's like there is no battery at all. At this point the battery back is not lost, it is just "frozen" and it can be jump-started back to life. How?
In order to restart a Lithium battery that has gone into protection mode you need to provide it some voltage, usually its nominal voltage is enough. It will drain quite a bit of current as it starts recharging right away, so you need a proper power source.
I restarted my battery with an external variable PSU. I removed the battery from the circuit, fed it 4.5V (use your own method to access the terminal wires) and increased until current started flowing. I think it unlocked at 6.5V and took more than 800 mA. I let it recharge a couple of minutes that way, unplugged and checked if it held the voltage. Since it did, I inserted it back in the HP sprocket and the charge over USB could be applied since the device now detected a working battery.
The Android app still works on my recent smartphone, so I could connect to the printer over Bluetooth and actually print out a picture! SUCCESS!
For your reference, my specimen has firmware version 1.1.8 and hardware version 6.
For the less electronically-inclined, another solution is to replace the battery pack (you still need to open the unit, if in doubt ask for assistance to someone knowledgeable near you).
My take on the the problem with HP sprocket. I think designers did not plan for the battery to enter the protection mode. So if they sense 0V on the battery socket the sprocket simply does not start the charge. It is a very conservative choice. Maybe they justify it as a security measure to avoid transferring energy to a broken battery that could lead to heat/fire, but I'm sure there is an acceptable solution in between the two extremes.
In order to complete the workaround for the sprocket, the owner must eat a pizza with nduja calabrese and porcini mushrooms the night before the process.
